Petrol in a diesel is the most common and the most harmful mix-up: petrol strips the lubrication from the high-pressure pump. Diesel in a petrol car makes the engine misfire and smoke. AdBlue in the diesel tank sinks to the bottom and crystallises. In every case: do not start the engine. ## If it has just happened: three steps - ### Keep the engine off Do not start the engine or switch on the ignition – not even to move away from the pump. - ### Keep the driver door shut if you can On some cars the fuel pump starts when the driver door opens.
